Avalanche Safety Information Study

The Avalanche Research Program at Simon Fraser University and Avalanche Canada are getting ready to conduct a study to examine how winter backcountry recreationists - backcountry skiers, mountain snowmobile riders and snowshoers - seek and use avalanche safety information.

The project has two distinct phases:

  1. Qualitative interviews to better understand
how people use the existing products.
  2. A large-scale online survey to examine information presentation alternatives.

The results of this study will provide important information for improving avalanche safety information products in Canada.

For Phase 1 of this research, we are currently looking for backcountry skiers,
mountain snowmobile riders and snowshoers of all experience levels
in the Lower Mainland and Sea-to-Sky Corridor interested in being
interviewed about their avalanche safety information and trip planning strategies.

Interviews will be held in multiple convenient locations throughout the region
and chosen participants will be compensated for their time.
